Transformation of the European Union: Militarization and Other Threats to Russian Interests
On May 29, the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies held a conference on the topic of "Transformation of the European Union: Militarization and Other Threats to Russian Interests." The event was attended by Deputy Director and Head of the Center for German Studies at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladislav Belov, Leading Researcher at the Department of Socioeconomic Research at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Fedorov, Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy at MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Olga Shishkina, Director of the Center for Military-Economic Research at the Institute of World Military Economy and Strategy at the National Research University Higher School of Economics Prokhor Tebin, as well as RISS specialists.
During the discussion, experts focused on the growing crisis in the European Union caused by numerous accumulated contradictions among EU member states. The conference participants paid special attention to the intensification of the militarization of the union, which carries serious strategic risks not only for the Brussels political institutions, but also for the entire system of regional and global security.
