The "Black-Red" Coalition Government of Chancellor Merz

The German government, with Friedrich Merz as its head, has recently passed over the 100th day in office. The day before this event RISS Expert Vyacheslav Kalinkin had analyzed the key priorities of the “black-red” coalition and the main goals of Berlin politics with a new chancellor.

Summary:

RISS Senior Expert Vyacheslav Kalinkin notes that the key change in the German government is not the Greens’ leave but the leave of the Free Democratic Party. The latter advocated for financial stability and called for economy. Their position became one of the reasons for a traffic light coalition to fail. All three parties (Social Democratic Party, Free Democratic Party, and the Greens) held different views on German economic policy.

Kalinkin highlights a positive side of the new government. It has pioneered the foundation of the The Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation. However, Merz’s government acts without federal funds and now, according to Kalinkin, it is unknown how they would spend money.

The expert also talks on Merz’s approaches towards such heartfelt issues as energy transition, migration, and relations with the USA. As for the Ukrainian conflict, the new government will further support Kyiv. Kalinkin is surprised with the fact that there is no communication channel between Moscow and Berlin. He calls it “unprecedented”.

RISS Expert does not stake on this government to work till the end of its term and says that the new chancellor is not very popular within the citizens of Germany.
