Situation on the Korean Peninsula: tensions are rising
RISS Senior Expert Roman Lobov analyzes another Seoul – Pyongyang escalation.
Summary:
A current turmoil on the Korean peninsula is driven by multiple launches of UAVs from the Republic of Korea in the direction of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. They are rigged with leaflets criticizing the North Korean regime. Some people believe that the current initiative was of a local character.
North Korea sent trash balloons to South Korea as part of retaliatory actions. This crisis cannot be analyzed without bearing in mind improved relations between the Republic of Korea and the USA. Naturally, Pyongyang is concerned about this fact.
The positions of US, China, and Japan are quite regular. Both the US and China delivered routine statements – the parties of the crisis should abstain from any actions that could lead to an escalation. As for Japan, the situation on the Korean peninsula does not worry this country much. It is more concerned with China’s and Russia’s policies.
RISS Senior Expert Roman Lobov says that the region is never perfectly stable. Pyongyang is preoccupied with a large annual joint military drills of the US and ROK. There is no relaxation of tensions.
