Russia – Sweden: A History of Rivalry in the Baltic

RISS expert Gleb Dovgilenko analyzed the centuries-old rivalry between Russia and Sweden in the Baltic Sea region. The analyst notes that for centuries, both powers claimed leadership in this waterway, but Peter the Great's victory in the Great Northern War seemed to put an end to Swedish ambitions. In Stockholm, however, revanchist sentiments persisted, leading to several more armed clashes, with our country emerging victorious. The expert also attributes the current anti-Russian course of the Swedish elite, in part, to the memory of defeats in past centuries.
