Mongolia on the world political map

RISS Expert Alina Medved commented on the specifics of Mongolia's international political position, as well as the main priorities of Ulaanbaatar's foreign policy at the present stage.

Summary:

Mongolia has recently hosted several world leaders, including President Putin, Macron, and the Pope.

It is the 19th largest country in the world by land area situated between China and Russia. The population of the country is 3.5 million people. The vast majority of them lives in the capital of the country - Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia has no outlet to the sea and its landscape is deserted. This state falls prey to the Global Warming – the average temperature has approximately 2°C risen. 40% of the country’s population are stock breeders. Therefore, Mongolia exports meat, cashmere, and wool.

Mongolia is among the leaders in Asia in terms of natural resource stocks but little of them are brought into development. Besides, the country attracts FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) in renewable energy resources. RISS Expert Alina Medved’ numbers limited road net, outlet to the sea absence, and heavy reliance on export prices among the economic issues of the country.

Both Russia and China have an active Strategic Partnership Treaty with Mongolia. However, trade-economic cooperation between Moscow and Ulaanbaatar is far from being fruitful. There used to be around 16 thousand Mongol students in Russia, now the quota is only about 600. Mongol young people cannot grip why they need to learn Russian because there are no mutual cooperation areas to apply the knowledge. However, there are several projects planned. For example, the Power of Siberia 2 Pipeline construction.

Mongolia’s foreign policy is aimed at diversification of international relations so as not to be in great dependance on China and Russia. The country is not part of any power bloc. They strive to be independent. Some people call this country as “Asian Switzerland”.
