Local Election Results in India: Triumph for Modi's Party

On May 5, the counting of results for legislative assemblies in several key Indian states and union territories was completed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide victory in the key state of West Bengal, ending the long-standing rule of the leftist Trinamool Congress (TRI), which had ousted communist forces from the state.

Vyacheslav Usov, a leading expert at the Middle East and South Asia Center at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS), notes that following the recent elections, Modi's party has gained dominance in 21 of 28 states, significantly consolidating its influence in the country. Furthermore, for the first time, left-wing parties remained outside India's political spectrum, which, according to the analyst, will provide the ruling party and the current government with maximum room to maneuver and implement their plans.
