Summary:

RISS Senior Expert Roman Lobov contemplates over a new Korean leader. Lee Jae Myung secured his win in the elections. He is a left-wing politician descending from an ordinary family, therefore Lee Jae Myung claims he knows what people really need.

In terms of domestic policy, the new president intends to smooth out any political frictions. One should not expect serious changes in foreign policy – the main principles will stay the same. Seoul is however concerned about improving relations between Moscow and Pyongyang. Both North and South Korea seek for improved interactions.
