The latest NATO summit was held in The Hague from June 24 to 25. The main topic of the meeting was a discussion on increasing military spending by the participating countries to 5% of GDP. But a number of other issues were also touched upon, including the conflict around Ukraine. The main results of the summit were summed up by RISS leading analyst Sergey Yermakov.
Summary:
RISS Leading Analyst Sergey Ermakov makes key conclusions over a recent NATO summit in the Hague. He believes that confirming close ties within the transatlantic alliance was the main goal reached at the summit. The mass media had spread speculations on the EU - US relations and the loyalty of the latter to the alliance. Therefore, analyst Ermakov believes the summit was part of the PR-campaign. All the decisions had been made beforehand. He also highlights the importance of the events, happened on the sidelines of the summit – like Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy.
It is worth mentioning that NATO member states agreed on increasing defence spending to 5% GDP but the requirement is not to be fulfilled until 2035. Russia is still seen as the greatest danger, meanwhile the attitude towards China is becoming less aggressive.
In Ermakov’s opinion, Europeans are not capable of dealing with their own defence and security problems by themselves. However, the USA did not give any definite answers to Europeans’ concerns over American comprehensive NATO support.
